National Citizen Service (NCS)

NCS (National Citizen Service) is a once-in-a-lifetime four week opportunity open to all Year 11 and 12 students – it’s great fun and a fantastic way to build skills and experiences needed to help young people stand out in job and university applications. They’ll take on new challenges and adventures, make new friends, learn new skills and give something back to their community.

Along with thousands of other people their age across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, they’ll spend time away from home completing outdoor challenges and building their confidence. They’ll work with local businesses and charities, learn about issues impacting their community and develop their interview skills through a variety of interactive workshops. Young people will then have the opportunity to plan and run their own community project to benefit their local area. After completing NCS, a special graduation ceremony will be held to recognise and celebrate young people’s achievements and present them with their certificate of accomplishment signed by the Prime Minister.

NCS is a stepping stone between secondary education and employment / further education - it’s UCAS approved and would look great on employment and university applications. Over 98% of those who took part in the programme last year would recommend it to their friends and 92% of participants said they’ve developed more skills for their future.

“I’ve learnt so much and experienced great things! I feel more prepared for when I go to university and my CV looks great – I have no idea why anyone wouldn’t want to do NCS! I had such a great time, did things I would’ve never done before and made new friends.” – Jochebel, NCS graduate.

NCS runs across a range of dates during the summer holidays and autumn half term. The programme costs £1,500 but because its government backed it costs you £50 which will cover all accommodation, transport and meals (during residential phases), activities and equipment. Bursaries are available and support can be provided for young people with additional needs.
